The short version

Password manager that bundles a VPN, dark-web monitoring, and a passwordless login flow. AES-256, zero-knowledge architecture.

What we liked

  • Premium bundles Hotspot Shield VPN at no extra cost.
  • AES-256 with Argon2d under a patented zero-knowledge architecture.
  • Friends & Family covers ten accounts for $89.88 a year.
  • AI-powered scam protection flags phishing sites and risky autofill destinations.

Could be better

  • On Friends & Family, the bundled VPN is limited to the plan administrator only.
  • Dark-web monitoring caps at five email addresses and ignores card numbers.
  • No phone support, slow email turnaround, and live chat is paid-plans only.
  • Premium at ~$4.99 a month is steep next to NordPass at roughly $1.59.

Overview

Dashlane has been pushing the bundled-perks angle for some time, and Premium is where that strategy is clearest. Subscribers get Hotspot Shield VPN included at no extra cost — an unusual perk in the password-manager category, and a genuine draw for households that would otherwise pay for both tools separately.

The vault itself uses AES-256 with Argon2d key derivation under a patented zero-knowledge architecture, so credentials are encrypted on-device before they sync. When Dashlane was caught up in the 2022 Zendesk and HubSpot vendor incidents, independent reporting confirmed that encrypted password vaults and master passwords were never accessed; the zero-knowledge model held.

The day-to-day feature set is solid for households and small teams. AI-powered scam protection runs alongside real-time phishing alerts, warning when autofill is about to fire on a fake Dashlane page or another risky destination. Capterra's 276 verified business reviewers rate Dashlane 4.5 out of 5, citing autofill on common sites, password sharing for teams, and a quick deployment path as everyday strengths.

The Friends & Family plan covers up to ten accounts at $89.88 a year, which undercuts per-seat pricing for larger households. The caveats are worth reading carefully. On Friends & Family, the bundled Hotspot Shield VPN is restricted to the plan administrator — the other nine seats get no VPN at all, a limitation Dashlane does not market prominently.

Dark-web monitoring is capped at five email addresses and watches passwords only; credit-card numbers are not scanned. Support is the weakest area in independent reviews: no phone support, slow email turnaround, and live chat gated to paid plans. Capterra's reviewers also report autofill misfires on rarer sites, overlapping pop-ups that hide input fields, and aggressive date-field auto-completion.

Pricing pressures the value calculus. Premium runs around $4.99 a month — markedly higher than budget rivals like NordPass at roughly $1.59 a month — a gap G2 reviewers cite repeatedly when the VPN and dark-web extras go unused. Dashlane says it audits regularly, but published third-party audit reports remain unavailable, which is a transparency gap when rivals like NordPass and 1Password publish Cure53 findings.

Dashlane works best for households that will use the VPN; otherwise the value case thins.
